The Mapmaker’s Heart is a deeply moving and imaginative tale that blends magic with emotion, taking readers on a journey through loss, healing, and hope.
Thirteen-year-old Leo finds comfort in maps, using them to escape a world that constantly reminds him of the loss of his sister, Asha. But everything changes when he discovers a mysterious, living map hidden in a forgotten corner of a library.
Drawn into a world shaped by lost dreams and fading memories, Leo meets Wren—a girl born from the map—and Theo, a boy who can walk through memories. Together, they travel through surreal landscapes where forests grow backwards and time stands still.
As this magical world begins to crumble, Leo must confront the truth he has been avoiding—the pain of his loss. Only by facing it can he begin to heal and find his way forward.
This heartfelt debut is a powerful story about courage, friendship, and the magic that exists even in the darkest moments.
- What inspired you to write this book, and how did the idea come to you?
This book began as a dream—my parents always wanted to see me write a book one day. At the same time, I had stories and emotions growing in my mind, and I wanted to turn them into something meaningful.
I imagined a magical map that could lead to impossible places, and slowly that idea grew into Leo’s journey—a story about courage, friendship, and finding hope again. Writing this book became a way for me to express my imagination and emotions, and to create something others could connect with.
- Can you share some insights into your writing process? Do you follow a routine?
Yes, I followed a simple but consistent routine while writing this book. I made it a rule to write for at least 25 minutes every day, no matter what. I didn’t worry about whether what I wrote was good—the important thing was to keep writing.
If a section didn’t feel right, I would revisit and rewrite it the next day. Before each session, I would read what I had written previously. This helped me reconnect with the emotions of the story, maintain continuity, and stay in the creative flow. Over time, I improved steadily.
- Are your characters based on real people, or are they purely imagined?
All the characters in my book are completely fictional and created from my imagination. They are not based on any specific real people.
However, their emotions and struggles may feel real because I tried to reflect feelings that many people experience—friendship, courage, and hope. The personalities, backstories, and journeys of each character were developed entirely through creativity.
- Your book explores themes of friendship and hope. What motivated you to focus on these?
I wanted to explore hope and healing because they are experiences everyone goes through in different ways. Sometimes, especially at a young age, we don’t talk about feeling lost or missing someone.
Through Leo’s journey, I wanted to show that it’s okay to feel pain and to struggle with letting go. The message I hope readers take away is that healing doesn’t mean forgetting—it means learning to live with love in a new way. Even when something feels impossible, there is always a path forward.
- How did you create such a rich and immersive world?
While creating the world of The Mapmaker’s Heart, I focused more on emotions than geography. I wanted the setting to feel magical but also deeply personal—almost like the places were reflections of the characters’ feelings.
Instead of using real locations or historical events, I built the world around ideas like memory, hope, and change. I was inspired by ordinary places like libraries, quiet streets, and peaceful corners where imagination feels alive.
My goal was to create a world that feels magical yet familiar—something readers can escape into while still recognizing parts of themselves within it.
Step into a world where imagination heals and hope lights the way.
