New Delhi, July 2025 — In a world of modern medicine, one man has harmoniously bridged tradition and science to craft a movement that’s gaining ground globally — Cowpathy. Revered as “The Cowpathy Man”, Prof. (Dr.) R.S. Chauhan is a name that echoes across the fields of veterinary science, animal immunopathology, and natural health solutions rooted in India’s Vedic heritage.
Born on September 10, 1958, in a humble farmer’s family, Dr. Chauhan’s journey from the fields of rural India to the highest pinnacles of veterinary research and education is nothing short of inspiring. An academic genius, he completed his Bachelor’s (80.3%), Master’s (85.8%), and Ph.D. (90%) in Veterinary Pathology from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar.
A Career Dedicated to Science and Service
Over four decades of unwavering service to the nation, Prof. Chauhan has donned multiple roles: Assistant Professor, National Fellow, Joint Director at IVRI, and eventually Director & Vice-Chancellor of ICAR-IVRI. He also led as Campus Director, IBT Patwadangar, and Professor & Head, Veterinary Pathology from 2014 to 2024.
He is a prolific academician who has authored over 120 books, including 35 manuals and a monograph, and penned 107 book chapters, 241 research papers, 65 review articles, and an impressive 328 semi-technical articles. Through 182 conference presentations and 139 training sessions, he has trained thousands — from scientists and students to farmers and butchers — across India and abroad.
Birth of Cowpathy: The Science of Panchgavya
What makes Prof. Chauhan’s contributions truly unique is his scientific validation of Panchgavya, an ancient Indian system using five products derived from cows (milk, curd, ghee, urine, and dung). Through rigorous trials and laboratory research, he coined and branded this holistic system as “Cowpathy”, positioning it as a viable alternative therapy — particularly for chronic illnesses like cancer, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory diseases.
His research has given Cowpathy credibility in scientific circles, and today, it stands at the intersection of tradition and biotechnology, proving how indigenous knowledge can find its footing in the modern world.
Scientific Achievements and Pathbreaking Research
Prof. Chauhan has contributed to India’s veterinary landscape in unparalleled ways. He:
- Isolated the camel pox virus and developed rapid diagnostic tests for diseases like Enterotoxaemia and Pyometra.
- Discovered the role of cell-mediated immunity in rotavirus infection in calves.
- Pioneered work in immunopathology related to pesticides, mycotoxins, heavy metals, and nanoparticles.
- Developed the MTT dye-based test for evaluating immune responses — a first in India.
He has led 25 major research projects funded by institutions like ICAR, DST, DADF, and the Govt. of Uttarakhand, while also guiding over 50 postgraduate and doctoral students, many of whom are now leaders in their respective fields.
Awards, Recognition, and Legacy
A lifetime decorated with over 30 national and international awards, Dr. Chauhan has received the Best Teacher Award (2004), Outstanding Scientist Award (2019), and the Claude Bourgelat Innovative Scientist Award (2020), among many others. Notably, he was honored as “COWPATHY MAN” at GADVASU, Ludhiana.
He is actively associated with 15 scientific societies and has held key positions including Chairman, Cow Therapy Society, President, Dr. J.L. Vegad Foundation, and Vice-President, Indian Society of Veterinary Educators.
He has also served in top committees like the WHO-IPCS, AIIMS Central Management Committee, VCI curriculum committees, and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI). His policy-shaping work has touched areas like reuse of large animals, grading animal facilities, and ISO certification of diagnostic labs.
Gauma Farm: The Living Model of Natural Farming and Cowpathy
Even after retiring from active academics, Prof. Chauhan hasn’t slowed down. He has established Gauma Farm in Inderpur, Rudrapur, as a model for Badri cow conservation, natural farming, and Panchgavya product development. The farm serves as both a research demonstration unit and a healing center that reflects his lifelong commitment to holistic health and animal welfare.
Prof. R.S. Chauhan’s work is a testament to what happens when deep-rooted Indian traditions meet modern scientific rigor. As the Cowpathy movement gains momentum, his legacy continues to inspire the next generation of scientists, farmers, and healthcare seekers to embrace the healing powers of India’s sacred cow.
In a world seeking sustainable and alternative health solutions, Prof. R.S. Chauhan truly shines as a beacon of hope — blending tradition, science, and service in a way that few have ever achieved.
