Bengaluru Braces for Cyclone Fengal
Heavy rainfall is forecasted for Karnataka, including Bengaluru, as Cyclone Fengal approaches, prompting concerns about potential disruptions. While no official holiday has been declared for schools and colleges yet, precautionary measures are underway to ensure public safety. Previously, during October’s heavy rains, Bengaluru’s district authorities had announced school and college closures.
IMD Issues Cyclone Fengal Rain Alert
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued:
- Yellow Alert: Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kolar, Chikkaballapura, Ramanagara, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi.
- Orange Alert: Kodagu, Mysuru, Chamarajanagara, Mandya, Hassan, Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga.
Cyclone Fengal is expected to bring heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, particularly to Chamarajanagara, Mysuru, Kodagu, and Dakshina Kannada districts. Bengaluru and other regions may see rainfall ranging from 35 to 85 mm, with peak impacts anticipated on Monday and Tuesday.
BBMP on High Alert
In Bengaluru, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath has instructed officials to remain on duty over the weekend to tackle possible emergencies. Control rooms will operate round-the-clock, and 28 tree-cutting teams are on standby for incidents involving fallen trees. Pumps, sandbags, and drainage maintenance efforts are in place to address waterlogging.
Residents are advised to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
