Poet Sudip Chandra Halder Calls for Literary Preservation at Mahalaya Celebration

Kolkata, September 22, 2025 — On the auspicious occasion of Mahalaya, the cultural heart of Kolkata came alive with a vibrant literary celebration hosted by emerging publishing house Oikkyotan. Nearly 200 literature enthusiasts, writers, and creative minds gathered to mark the day with poetry, books, and cultural reflections.

A Festival of Words and Culture

The evening unfolded as a multi-layered literary program, featuring poetry recitations, a felicitation ceremony, and a grand book launch. One of the defining highlights was the unveiling of 28 new titles, a landmark moment in contemporary Bengali literature that reaffirmed the city’s literary vibrancy.

Guests of Honour and Felicitation

The program was graced by distinguished personalities — Poet and Researcher Sudip Chandra Halder as Guest of Honour, with Professor Tabarak Ali and Poet Sultana Parveen as special guests.
Halder was welcomed with a traditional uttoriyo and conferred with the Sharad Samman, an honour recognizing his contributions to literature.

Sudip Chandra Halder’s Keynote Reflections

In his keynote address, Halder evoked the spiritual and cultural depth of Mahalaya:

“Today, there’s a festive spirit all around. The atmosphere of Durga Puja in Kolkata begins with the iconic Chandi recitation by Birendra Kishore Bhadra. The fields are blooming with kash flowers — nature itself seems ready to welcome Maa Durga. Hosting a literary gathering at the dawn of Devi Paksha is truly meaningful.”

He urged young writers to shoulder the responsibility of carrying forward Bengal’s literary heritage, calling Bengali literature “a gem in the crown of world literature.” At the same time, he cautioned against the risks of an overly digital era:

“While technology is a powerful tool, we must ensure it does not dilute or harm the essence of literature.”

Words of Encouragement from Fellow Guests

Professor Tabarak Ali praised the growing involvement of young writers:

“In an age dominated by technology, it is heartening to see young people gathering in the name of literature. I feel honoured to be part of this event.”

Poet Sultana Parveen shared her admiration for the creative energy of the youth:

“I’m deeply moved by the dedication and creative energy of today’s young writers.”

A Vote of Thanks and Closing Note

The evening concluded with Sangbad Sahu, head of Oikkyotan Publication, offering a warm vote of thanks to guests, authors, and attendees:

“Your presence and support inspire us to continue nurturing literary talent and celebrating Bengali literature.”

Emerging Voices in Attendance

The event also brought together notable young literary talents, including Riyali Basu, Nilima Mondal, Soumi Sarkar, Debasish Roy, Moumita Guria, Biprokash Das, and several others shaping the contemporary Bengali literary landscape.

Literature at the Heart of Kolkata’s Festivities

As Kolkata steps into the festive season, the Mahalaya gathering served as a reminder of the city’s timeless bond with literature, culture, and creative expression — a bond that continues to flourish through the passion of a new generation.
