RAI Urges Karnataka Food Safety Department to Look into the Matter of Incorrect Notices on Use of Synthetic Magnesium Silicate

Bengaluru, September 05, 2024- The Retailers Association of India (RAI) urges the Karnataka Food Safety Department to reconsider the notices against restaurants using Synthetic Magnesium Silicate as a clarifying agent in edible oils. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has approved its use, and RAI highlights that this practice aligns with compliance and customer safety standards.

Synthetic Magnesium Silicate is a filtration agent endorsed by leading global organisations, including the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, Food Chemicals Codex, and the US Pharmacopeia/National Formulary. It is widely used in the industry to enhance oil quality and minimise wastage and has no known adverse effects.

The notices issued by the Karnataka State Food Safety Department have led to confusion and disruptions for restaurants that are compliant with FSSAI regulations. Additionally, incorrect information circulated in local media has negatively affected the reputation of businesses committed to safe and lawful practices.

Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO of RAI, said, “The use of Synthetic Magnesium Silicate is fully compliant with FSSAI guidelines, and esteemed global organisations have validated its safety. RAI supports good practices that ensure customer safety and urges the Karnataka Food Safety Department to withdraw these notices to prevent further disruptions in the

food service industry.” RAI remains dedicated to supporting retailers and food service providers in maintaining the highest standards of food safety and fostering a positive business environment in

Karnataka.
