“Gangasnan”: Kalpana Patowary’s Musical Tribute to Maa Ganga and Sanatan Culture

Singer Kalpana Patowary, renowned for elevating Bhojpuri and folk music to international acclaim, has unveiled her highly anticipated musical documentary, “Gangasnan,” to mark the Mahapurna Kumbh of 2025. Released via the official YouTube channel of Music Box Kalpana Patowary, the documentary is based on Bhikhari Thakur’s timeless masterpiece, “Gangasnan,” and offers a contemporary interpretation infused with modern musical elements.

Speaking about the project, Kalpana shared, “‘Gangasnan’ is more than just a song—it’s a heartfelt musical tribute to Maa Ganga and the essence of Sanatan culture. It aims to resonate with music lovers and anyone who reveres the sacred Ganga.”

This project features a distinctive blend of Indian jazz, blues, and traditional Bhojpuri music, brought to life by an extraordinary ensemble of musicians. Collaborators include Indian jazz legend Louis Banks, guitarist Kush Upadhyay, drummer Gino Banks, and sarangi maestro Dilshad Khan. Musicians from Spain and Denmark also lent their talents, contributing to the song’s global appeal. The result is a harmonious fusion of eastern and western sounds, evoking a deep connection to the spiritual essence of the Ganga.

The lyrics, created in collaboration with the late folk artist Ramagya Ram and Arunava Deka, emphasize the spiritual significance and cultural heritage surrounding the Ganga. Kalpana’s soulful rendition breathes new life into Bhikhari Thakur’s work, honoring his legacy as the “Shakespeare of Bhojpuri.”

Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Samujjal Kashyap, the documentary was filmed in culturally significant locations like Kashi and Prayagraj. These vibrant settings beautifully capture the spiritual and cultural essence of the Ganga, making “Gangasnan” a visual and auditory homage to India’s rich heritage.

This unique collaboration, managed by PRO Ranjan Sinha, showcases Kalpana Patowary’s artistic versatility and dedication to preserving and reinventing folk traditions for global audiences.
